The following articles will help you understand the importance of the chiropractic family wellness lifestyle.

Children's Chiropractic Safety Research:

The I.C.P.A. has initiated a ground breaking study on the safety and effectiveness of chiropractic care for children. The preliminary results are outstanding and show that chiropractic care is safe for children. Even more significant is that parents reported three unexpected improvements with their children's care:
1- Improved sleeping
2- improved behavior and attitude
3- improved immune system function.

Why Should Children Have Chiropractic Care?
Jeanne Ohm, D.C.
More and more parents are seeking chiropractic care for their children. Many spinal problems seen in adults began as early as birth. Even so called 'natural' birthing methods can stress an infant's spine and developing nerve system. The resulting irritation to the nerve system caused by spinal and cranial misalignment can be the cause of many newborn health complaints. Colic, breathing problems, nursing difficulties, sleep disturbances, allergic reactions and chronic infections can often be traced to nerve system stress.
Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents have their newborns checked right away. As the infant grows, learning to hold up the head, sit, crawl and walk are all activities that affect spinal alignment and are important times to have a child checked by a Doctor of Chiropractic.
As the child begins to participate in regular childhood activities like skating or riding a bike, small yet significant spinal misalignments (subluxations) may occur. If neglected, the injuries during this period of rapid growth may lead to more serious problems later in life. Subtle trauma throughout childhood will affect the future development of the spine leading to impaired nervous system function. Any interference to the vital nerve system will adversely affect the body’s ability to function at its best.
One of the most common reason parents seek care for their child is trauma from an injury of some sort. These misalignments may or may not result in immediate pain or symptoms. Regular chiropractic checkups can identify potential spinal injury from these traumas, make the correction early in life and help avoid many of the health complaints seen later in adults. Proper spinal hygiene is an important key to better health.
Another sought out reason for care is the resolution of a particular symptom or condition. Parents seek care for conditions such as colic, ear infections, asthma, allergies and headaches (to name a few) because they have heard from other parents that chiropractic care can help.
It is important to understand that the doctor of chiropractic does not treat conditions or diseases. The expertise of the chiropractor is in checking the child’s spine for misalignments that impair nervous system function therefore affecting overall body function. The bones of the spine, the vertebrae, house and protect the spinal cord. The spinal cord is an extension of the brain and carries information from the brain to the body parts and back to the brain again. Subluxations interfere with the nerves’ ability to transmit this vital information.
The nerve system controls and coordinates the function of all the systems in the body: circulatory, respiratory, digestive, hormonal, eliminative and immune system. Any aspect of health may be impaired by nerve interference. The chiropractic adjustment restores nerve system function allowing the body the ability to express a greater state of health and well-being.
The doctor of chiropractic will take a case history and perform a chiropractic exam to determine if spinal subluxations exist. Chiropractic adjusting procedures are modified to fit a child's size, weight, and unique spinal condition. They are both gentle and specific to the child’s developing spinal structures. Most parents report that their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and look forward to subsequent visits. They also report that their children experience a greater level of health while under regular chiropractic care.
To enhance your child’s ability to function in a greater state of health, we can help you find a doctor of chiropractic near you who is dedicated to serving children with the utmost of care. Once your family has experienced the many benefits of chiropractic care—please help us tell others!

Does No Vehicle Damage Mean No Injury after an Accident?

Does No Vehicle Damage Mean No Injury after an Accident? One of the most frustrating types of auto accident to work with is that with little or no vehicle damage. A current report helps us understand how these collisions can result in injury.
A common misconception formulated is that the amount of vehicle crash damage due to a collision offers a direct correlation to the degree of occupant injury.

Car crashes with minor vehicle damage are a little confusing; if the car wasn't damaged much, it must have been a very minor crash, and so the occupant shouldn't be injured. Right?
Wrong . . .
In fact, researchers have specifically looked at this problem, and have found that there is no relationship at all between the amount of damage a car received in a crash and the amount of occupant injury. Here are the facts about low impact collisions:
Engineering test collisions consistently show that the peak vehicle G forces in a collision are approximately twice as high as the average G forces, and that peak occupant G forces are about twice as large as peak vehicle forces. Thus, an occupant in a low speed collision with no damage to the vehicle may be at a significantly higher risk of injury than an occupant in a collision with a damaged vehicle.
Quick Recovery After Whiplash A car crash—even a "minor" one—can be a huge disruption in your life and can cause months of pain and disability. With proper treatment, however, you can be back to your normal activities much faster and reduce the chances of chronic problems.
Staying Active
One of the first things to remember after an auto injury is to stay active. When injured, the body tenses the muscles and creates inflammation around the injured area to "guard" the injury from further harm.
Unfortunately, this protective mechanism can cause problems down the road. If left untreated, the "guarded" area will lose motion and flexibility. This can result in reduced function and premature degeneration of the discs in your neck and back.
The effects of early intervention are dramatic. A study conducted in Sweden compared patients who were treated within four days of their auto injury to those who waited two weeks. The authors found that patients who received prompt treatment that used gentle neck exercises early after the injury had much improved functioning three years after the collision.
There are many reasons why active, early care helps after whiplash:
  • Staying mobile helps overcome your fear of motion or re-injury.
  • Activity increases blood flow to the injury and improves healing.
  • Movement prevents the formation of scar tissue at the injury site.
Understanding Traumatic Brain Injury Brain injuries are common after an automobile collision, and they can occur even when there is no direct head impact. Unfortunately, many cases of brain injury are undiagnosed and unrecognized. The key to recovery from a brain injury is to realize that injury has occurred. Some of the most common symptoms of mild brain injury are headache, dizziness, confusion, loss of concentration, and problems with memory.
Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic also serves the same function, by carefully targeting the injured segments of your spine and increasing mobility in those areas. By combining chiropractic with home exercises, we can get you back on the road to health!

Research Straightens Out Misconceptions

Adjusting the View of Chiropractic Care

Anyone who has lived with lower back pain knows how debilitating it can be – impacting the most routine daily activities, from sitting pain-free to tying a shoelace. Traditional medical care has ranged from rest and medication to surgery.
But now chiropractic care – long maligned by mainstream health care practitioners as a kind of pseudo medical science – is gaining some serious credibility as a more effective and less costly alternative treatment for back pain, thanks to a host of studies published in the highly respected Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT).

Key JMPT Findings

• Reported this summer in a fascinating Washington Post article, Mainstream Makes Adjustments, a study published in the June 2007 issue revealed that "patients who turned first to chiropractors and other alternative-medicine professionals for care were hospitalized and had surgery 60 percent less often and spent 85 percent less on pharmaceuticals than those with medical doctors as primary care providers."
• A study published in October 2005 revealed that the cost of chiropractic care is identical or superior to traditional medical care for treating chronic low-back pain, with chiropractic care being more effective.
• A January 2005 study showed that patients with chronic spinal pain syndromes did markedly better than patients who received either medication or acupuncture.

Consultation
You will have a consultation with Dr. Anders Anderson  to discuss your health-related problems, concerns, as well as potential treatment options. Your first visit is designed for Dr. Anderson to learn more about you, your condition and your expectations to determine whether chiropractic care meet your goals.
Examination
After your consultation,  Dr. Anderson will perform a complete chiropractic examination testing your reflexes, your ability to turn and bend as well as other standard neurological, orthopedic, postural, and physical examinations. Nothing will be done in our office without your consent.
X-Ray Studies
Your specific condition may require us to take x-rays to get a full evaluation of a patient. X-rays help us rule out more serious conditions or assist us in developing the most effective treatment plan for you. Most people are amazed once they see their x-rays and can often immediately identify their misalignment's and degeneration themselves.
Report of Findings Once all the information and examinations have been performed, Dr. Anderson will give you a report of findings to answer the three most popular questions: Can you help me? What do you recommend that I do to get better? How much is it going to cost? After discussing with you your history and your goals, examining your spine and reviewing any x-rays or tests, Dr. Anderson will discuss recommendations with you. If you have a condition that requires care with other providers, the doctor will tell you. If  Anderson believes we can help you, we will recommend treatment and a wellness program.
Treatment
Patients will generally be provided with their first treatment at the conclusion of the appointment. This may include spinal adjustments, physical therapies, and/or soft tissue therapies. Treatment is interactive with you so you can express any concerns you have about the style of adjustment you will be most comfortable with.

Wellness Program
Prior to leaving, patients will be instructed on a wellness program to be conducted at home. If you are in pain when you first come into our office this may include ice or heat application instructions, avoidance of certain activities or positions, as well as home exercises and/or stretches. If you desire an overall wellness lifestyle, our wellness team will work with you to create good habits and routines that support your success. Every body is unique and different and therefore everyone requires a unique and customized wellness plan. The foundation of our overall wellness lifestyle is maintaining healthy posture and good spinal alignment, eating a healthy diet, taking supplements, keeping your weight under control and stress relief.
